Principle 1: Link Your Program to Your Jobs

Choose a program related to your current or future job role.

Example: If you’re a software engineer, pick MS in Computer Science, not MS in Organizational Behavior.

Principle 2: Avoid Repeating the Same Major

Don’t select a program too similar to your previous degree at the same level - it may cause RFE issues.

Example: If you already hold a Master’s in Data Analytics, don’t pursue another one. Instead, consider an MBA with a focus in Business Analytics or aim for a doctorate.

1. Check Your Status End Date

Always align your CPT start date with your OPT expiration (or other status end date).

Goal: avoid any long gaps in employment or status.

Step 1: Confirm enrollment

Confirm your enrollment by submitting the Enrollment Confirmation Form.

By signing the form, you signal your intent to enroll in your selected program start.

*Please only submit this form if you are certain of your plans to enroll at NEC.

Step 2: Receive NEC account information

Once you have confirmed your intent to enroll at New England College, your admission counselor will send your NEC account information, including New England College Student ID, email account and Blackboard
This can take up to 72 hours.
Contact HelpDesk@nec.edu for technical issues.
Check your email regularly and be sure you can log into MyNEC, your NEC email and Blackboard.
Please note, you will not have access to Blackboard until the Friday before your program starts.

Step 3: Receive and Complete the EAF

Important: An internship is required from the beginning of this program. You may not begin the program without an internship lined up. Internships or jobs must directly relate to the program objectives of the student’s chosen program of study.

Deadline: The EAF must be submitted to your DSO no later than Friday of the first week of the program start. Students are not eligible to remain in the program without a secured internship from the beginning of the program.

After your F-1 Visa has been approved, you will have access to the Employment Agreement Form (EAF) in your application portal. Please log in to your application portal and click “Employment Agreement Form” and “Begin New EAF.”
Once you complete the form, the EAF team will review your submission within 5 business days. If edits are required, the EAF team will email you with the required changes.
When the EAF team approves your EAF, you will receive a signature request by email. Once you sign the form, it will be sent to your work supervisor for review. Please have your work supervisor monitor their email for the signature request.

Step 4: Request a SEVIS transfer

Request a SEVIS record transfer from your current school

The deadline for SEVIS record release date is 4pm EST the Wednesday before the program starts.
Your acceptance email contains the details your current school international advisor will need to set up the transfer.

Step 5: Course registration

Receive Course Registration from your Academic Advisor

Academic Advising will register your first class closer to the term start. Course information will be sent to your NEC email account.
Students cannot register themselves for their first term. Please be patient.

Step 6: CPT I-20

Receive your CPT-authorized I-20

Once your SEVIS record is released to New England College and your EAF is approved, your NEC DSO will issue your CPT-authorized I-20.
This will take 1 - 3 business days. The DSO will email it to your NEC email account only.
Do not work until you have the CPT I-20 and have confirmed that the CPT dates and employer information on page 2 of your I-20 are correct.

Step 7: Pay Your Tuition at MyNEC

You can only pay your tuition after you have been registered for classes.
Payment is due by 4PM EST the Friday before your term starts.
- Log into MyNEC using your NEC email address and password:
  - Go to Student Services and Financial Aid
  - Online Account
  - Make a Payment

Step 8: Log in to Blackboard

Log in to Blackboard the Saturday or Sunday before the program start date, sign in to each course, review your syllabi and participate.
- Reminder: You will not have access to Blackboard unitl the Friday before your program starts.

Step 9: Plan ahead for residency

In-person residencies are mandatory and held over a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Dates are set in advance and can be found on residency page.

Step 1: Contact Your Current School’s DSO

Inform the international office at your current school that you plan to transfer to NEC. Follow their instructions for completing the SEVIS Transfer-Out process.

You will need to provide:

Your Offer Letter of Admission from NEC
NEC’s SEVIS Code: BOS214F00408000
Your requested SEVIS release date

You must set the release date:

No later than 60 days after your program ends
Or 60 days after your OPT ends, whichever comes first, and before NEC’s semester begins

Once submitted, the release may take a few business days. If your school cannot approve the requested date, communicate directly to agree on a new date.

Step 2: Transfer-In your SEVIS

Once your SEVIS record is released by your current school, NEC’s DSO will complete the transfer-in and generate a new I-20. This may take a few days, but your SEVIS record is held by NEC as soon as the transfer is processed.

After your SEVIS is transferred, your OPT ends immediately. CPT I-20 processing takes about 1 week, and during this time you are not authorized to work or get paid. Most students take a short unpaid break during this transition.

Step 1: Submitting Your CPT Application Materials

To apply for CPT, students must email the following documents to NEC DSO

Job Offer Letter
Employment Agreement Form

You may submit your offer letter if it includes:

Your full name
Company name, address, and contact info
Your position title
A signature (typed or handwritten) from a company representative
Alternatively: Submit an employment verification letter.

Step 2: Receive Your CPT-Authorized I-20

Your CPT I-20 will be emailed to your NEC student email, so do not start working until:

You have received the updated I-20
You’ve confirmed the CPT dates and employer information on page 2 are accurate
