Texas Tour: Strengthening Veteran Support and University Partnerships

We Took the Mission to Texas

Over the last week of March, our team traveled across Texas — from Houston to College Station to Killeen — to do the kind of work that only happens in person: meeting veterans where they live, learning what they actually need, and building the local infrastructure to serve them better.

Here's what we found, and what it means for our shared mission.

Texas Recruiting Universities Trip

The Campuses We Visited

We made stops at Houston Community College, University of Houston, Central Texas College, Texas A&M (two campuses), UT San Antonio, and City College of Houston. Each visit gave us a clearer picture of how institutions in high-military-population areas are — and aren't — supporting veterans on their path to a degree.

A few standouts: Houston Community College has active veteran student organizations and strong peer networks that could become powerful referral channels. The University of Houston and Texas A&M have a dedicated veteran lounge and a service-first culture.

These are the kinds of environments where our university partners can make a real difference — and where we want to deepen our placement pipeline.

On-the-Ground Market Research

One of the most valuable parts of this trip was sitting down with veterans at various stages of their transition — including active duty service members at Fort Hood going through official transition programs. Their candor was invaluable.

A consistent theme emerged: veterans are motivated, resourceful, and often already researching their options independently. What they lack is trusted guidance on how to navigate education benefits in a way that actually works for their situation. That gap is exactly where VeteranDegrees — and our university partners — can step in.

We also spent time in the communities surrounding military installations: VA hospitals, military depots, and local stores frequented by veterans. The interest was real. We left contact information, set up stands, and in several cases had veterans proactively engage us on the spot.

New Local Partnerships Taking Shape

Beyond campuses, we're building a community-level presence in Texas through partnerships with veteran-serving organizations, including SVA chapters, veteran student groups, and GI homeless support programs. These partnerships extend our reach to veterans who may not yet be thinking about school — but should be.

We're also developing a campus ambassador program to keep momentum going after our visits. Having a trusted peer on the ground is often what converts awareness into action.

Growing the Team to Serve You Better

To support the markets we're entering, we're actively hiring Business Development Managers in key locations across Texas and similar regions. This means more local presence, faster follow-up, and stronger on-the-ground support for the veterans you enroll.

Let's Talk About Your Institution's Fit in These Markets

If your institution is interested in reaching veterans in Texas or similar high-military-population areas, we'd love to connect. We have fresh insights, new contacts, and a growing local network — and we want to put them to work for you.
