Starting in the U.S. with Uncertainty
My undergraduate days were spent in China, but I chose to pursue my graduate studies in the US. Initially, I wasn’t sure about staying in the US. Given the one-year OPT and an unpopular employment major, my job search was quite laid-back; a friend helped me get a job at a small consulting firm.
After not winning the H1B lottery in March, I started to explore other options. I found the CPT program to be the most suitable option for me to stay in the country.
Why Westcliff?
First, school ranking is not what I am pursuing; all I need is a way to help me maintain my status and stay in the US. And the most important aspect of a CPT school is onsite frequency. After searching for day 1 CPT universities in my area, I discovered that Westcliff, despite having slightly higher tuition fees, provided me with the most convenient schedule, which ultimately solidified my decision.
Academic Structure & Managing Workload
Although I'm not a fan of coding or great with statistics, I chose a major that used STEM but didn’t require intensive coding. Later, I chose IT Project Management as my concentration since it related to my job within the Master of Information Technology program.
The workload thus far has been manageable. Weekly requirements involve writing a 300-word Discussion based on pre-arranged questions and replying to 2-3 peers’ discussions. Approximately every two weeks, a 2-3 page essay is due, and the final week typically involves a presentation.
My Daily University Life
At Westcliff, you have three advisors. The admission advisor helps with your application and orientation. After enrolling, the academic advisor assists with courses and tuition. Lastly, the International Advisor takes care of everything related to the CPT program. Most communications and applications, including for CPT, are conveniently done through Google forms.
CPT Application & Transition
Westcliff uses a Google sheet to keep track of all the CPT application dates. There are also online info sessions where an advisor explains how to apply for CPT and answers questions. The application process involves a special Google Form where you submit your offer, a Cooperative Agreement form, and a CPT fee slip before the deadline.
Unexpected Joys
Though I mainly wanted to maintain my status, I ended up networking with students from various industries. The school also organizes numerous activities, such as beach bonfires or hiking, open to all students. I even attended a 30th-anniversary celebration.
