Hybrid professional programs combine online and in-person classes, making them ideal for students who work while studying, such as those in Day 1 CPT programs. But how much time should you allocate for homework? Understanding this helps you organize your week, balance work, and excel in school. As an MSIT student at Westcliff University, I’ll share my experience to help you anticipate what to expect! 

How Many Hours did I Spend on Homework?

In my hybrid program, I typically dedicate around 2 to 4 hours each week to completing homework assignments. The amount of time I spend can vary significantly depending on the nature of the tasks assigned. For instance, during weeks when the assignments are relatively straightforward, such as answering questions or completing short exercises, I find that I can manage my workload in approximately 2 hours. However, there are weeks when the assignments are more demanding, involving complex coding tasks or extensive projects, which require me to invest closer to 4 hours or even more. As a student pursuing a Master of Science in Information Technology, the time commitment is largely influenced by the specific requirements set by my professors. Each assignment brings its own set of challenges and learning opportunities, making time management a crucial skill in balancing my academic responsibilities with other commitments.

Why Do Costs Vary? Hidden Costs of a Day 1 CPT Program

Here’s a detailed look at the types of homework I engage in:

• Writing Papers or Discussions: In my coursework, I frequently write short papers or respond to discussion questions. These assignments are primarily designed to reinforce the material we cover in class, allowing me to delve deeper into the topics discussed. Occasionally, I need to conduct additional research online to gather more information and provide a well-rounded perspective in my responses. This process not only enhances my understanding but also sharpens my research skills.
• Case Studies: My academic program often includes case studies, which are typically 2-3 pages long. These assignments require me to read, analyze, and reflect on real-world scenarios related to our field of study. Completing a case study usually takes me around 2 hours, as it involves critical thinking and applying theoretical knowledge to practical situations. This exercise is invaluable in developing my analytical skills and understanding of complex issues.
• Discussion Posts: As part of our interactive learning environment, I participate in online discussion forums. Here, I answer the instructor’s questions and engage with my peers by commenting on at least two of their responses. This activity, which takes about 30 minutes, is instrumental in broadening my perspective as it exposes me to diverse viewpoints and encourages collaborative learning.
• Coding: Among all my assignments, coding tasks present the greatest challenge. These assignments require me to apply programming skills, often using my instructor’s notes as a guide and supplementing them with online resources. Depending on the complexity of the task, coding can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to complete. However, these assignments are not a weekly occurrence, allowing me time to focus on other areas of study.
• Group Project: Once each semester, I collaborate with approximately five classmates on a group project. We collectively choose a topic, engage in discussions, and ultimately create a presentation. This project is spread out over several weeks, requiring a few hours of work in total. It is an excellent opportunity to develop teamwork and communication skills, as well as to learn from the diverse insights and expertise of my peers.

Examples from My Own Classes

At Westcliff University, I spent 2 hours on a case study about a tech company's data issue, requiring critical thinking and a concise report. I also engaged in a 30-minute discussion post on coding, benefiting from classmates' diverse perspectives. A challenging coding task took 3 hours, enhancing my skills. My group is working on a semester project presentation, which has improved our teamwork and allowed us to learn from each other.
