Major: Master of Science in Business Analytics
IS 5113 Data Mining and Data Visualization
Instructor: Jason Turner
Delivery: online

I took IS 5113 – Data Mining and Data Visualization with Professor Jason Turner, and overall, it was a pretty easy and manageable class. Everything is clearly laid out from the start, and as long as you complete all the assignments and watch the materials, you’ll do just fine. There’s not a ton of live interaction, so you need to stay on top of things on your own, but it’s very doable. Professor Turner sets clear expectations, and the course is focused more on applying concepts rather than getting too deep into theory. A big part of the class is working with Tableau. You’ll create different visualizations throughout the semester, and for the final project, you’ll build your own Tableau dashboard and record a video presentation walking through it. It’s not difficult, but it does take some time to pull everything together, so don’t leave it until the last minute. There’s not a lot of busywork, and the workload is pretty reasonable, which makes this class a good option if you’re working or taking other classes at the same time. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants a good introduction to data visualization and basic data mining concepts without getting overwhelmed.

IS 5213 Data Science and Big Data
Instructor: Sasanka Panda
Delivery: online

I took Data Science and Big Data with Professor Sasanka Panda, and overall, I found it to be a really valuable class. It’s especially useful if you want to get hands-on experience with data analysis using R. Just a heads-up—it’s very coding-heavy, so be prepared to spend a good amount of time writing and debugging code. The class focuses a lot on practical skills, which I appreciated. The projects are well-designed and teach you how to apply what you're learning to real-world data. That said, the projects can be tough if you don’t have a background in coding or statistics. I found myself struggling at times, especially early on, but I definitely learned a lot by pushing through. The weekly discussion posts are much easier in comparison. They’re more reflective and don’t take much time to complete, which helps balance out the workload from the more intense assignments. Professor Panda is a solid instructor. He’s organized, communicates clearly, and provides helpful materials. He’s also responsive if you reach out with questions, which makes a big difference when you’re stuck on a project. Overall, I’d recommend this course if you're serious about learning data science and you're ready to spend some time getting comfortable with R. It’s not an easy A, but it’s a course that actually teaches you something useful.

The class was good and the weekly assignments were interesting, just pay attention to the mid-term and final exam as they were long and need preparation from your side to get a higher score, other than that, everything is manageable. the professor is good when it comes to grading so no need to worry about him teaching this class.

The teacher is really nice. The regular assignments are simple. Since this is a business communication course, you need to record some videos where you appear on camera. If you register for Canva, it makes things much faster. If you're good at visual design (like designing logos, making PPTs, or editing videos), you'll find it very easy.

A ton of reading materials every week. This course turns out to be much more theoretical than practical. But professor seems to assign grades pretty generously

The class was good but the instructor was rough when it comes to grade, and focused more on the APA style, even if everything is done correctly, other than that, the class is easy to take.

My experience in the Design Thinking course was intellectually rewarding and practically insightful. The quality of the class was high, with a well-structured curriculum that progressively introduced the core concepts of design thinking, from empathy and ideation to prototyping and testing. The class successfully bridged theory with real-world application through case studies and hands-on activities. Homework Load: The workload was moderate but meaningful. Assignments were not excessive in volume, but they required critical thinking, creativity, and reflection. Most tasks involved applying design thinking principles to real or hypothetical problems, which made the homework feel purposeful rather than repetitive. Professor’s Teaching Style: The professor had an engaging and facilitative teaching style. Rather than relying on traditional lectures, he encouraged collaborative discussions and interactive sessions. His feedback was constructive and often helped deepen our understanding of user-centered problem-solving. General Evaluation: Overall, this class was an excellent addition to my academic experience. It challenged my assumptions, enhanced my problem-solving skills, and gave me a framework I can apply in both business and engineering contexts. I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in innovation, product development, or creative problem-solving.
