CPT - Types of CPT and Their Difference

CPT can be categorized by program requirements into required or elective, and by time into full-time or part-time.

For international students in the United States, CPT is often an important part of their academic and professional experience. This article will guide international students in understanding various types of CPT based on program requirements and working hours

By Program Requirements

  • Optional CPT: Most degree programs do not require students to participate in internships during their studies. However, if international students wish to participate in off-campus internships for personal development, they will need to apply for CPT work authorization.

  • Required CPT: Required CPT is a work authorization mandated by an academic program as a graduation requirement for all students.

By Working Hours

  • Part-time CPT: Part-time CPT allows for working 20 hours or less per week.

  • Full-time CPT: Full-time CPT allows for working more than 20 hours per week.

Note:

If you use full-time CPT for 12 months, you will be ineligible for OPT for that degree.
