OPT Job Search: What to Do When Unemployment Days Run Out?

This article provides effective solutions for those who are not able to secure a job position within the 90-day unemployment period.

If you remain unemployed for 90 days after starting OPT (or an additional 60 days during the STEM OPT period), your F-1 status will become invalid.

Your employment status during OPT is tracked in the SEVP system. If you reach the 90-day limit, you will need to either leave the country or change to another status.

Here are several solutions for those who are unable to find a job by the end of the unemployment period:

  • Target small companies: Accept any job related to your field, even with smaller companies,  to gain relevant work experience.

  • Seek unpaid internships or volunteer work: This option is suitable only for students during their first year of OPT, since the STEM OPT Extension requires paid employment.

  • Consider independent contractor positions: Part-time jobs and independent contracts can offer flexibility and valuable experience while you continue your job search.

  • Start a business: If you have an entrepreneurial spirit, starting your own business is a viable option. However, self-employment under STEM OPT has specific requirements.

  • Pursue a new degree: Continue your education by pursuing a new degree. If you want to maintain work eligibility through CPT, consider enrolling in a Day 1 CPT program.
