OPT - International Travel with an Active F-1 Visa

During OPT, you still hold an F-1 visa, so the rules for entry are the same as during your student years. Below are important considerations for international travel during OPT.

During your OPT period, you are still on an F-1 visa. As long as your F-1 status is active, you can re-enter the U.S. with an active F-1 visa.

However, it is recommended to wait until you receive your EAD card before leaving the country. Ideally, you should also have a job offer in hand. Otherwise, when re-entering the U.S., you may be questioned about your reasons for re-entry. Having an EAD card and a job offer can demonstrate your genuine intention to return for work.

Required Documents for Re-Entry

When re-entering the U.S. on OPT, you should carry the following documents:

  • Passport (with a valid F-1 visa)

  • New I-20 (with "Travel Signature" by the school's DSO)

  • EAD card

  • Formal job offer or employment verification letter (specifying job title, job duties, and employment dates)

  • Recent paystubs (if applicable)

Passing Customs as Your OPT Nears Expiration

As your OPT nears its expiration, you might face additional scrutiny from customs when entering the U.S. While this does not mean you will be denied entry, you should be well-prepared.

If questioned by customs, explain that you are returning for work and that you understand you will need to leave the country if you do not obtain an H-1B by the end of OPT. This can reduce the chances of customs suspecting that you might overstay illegally after your OPT expires.
