OPT students can apply for an SSN in two ways: (1) Apply for an SSN when filling out Form I-765. (2) Apply for an SSN at the Social Security Administration (SSA) office after receiving your EAD card.
What is SSN?
An SSN (Social Security Number) is an important identification number for residents in the U.S. It is used for various purposes, including taxes, employment, loans, and social welfare. Your SSN is also linked to your personal credit score.
While international students can use an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) for tax purposes, an SSN is required to work. Some students get an SSN before starting a CPT internship, while others wait until they start working on OPT to apply for an SSN.
How to Apply for an SSN as an OPT Student?
1. Apply for an SSN when applying for OPT (the most time-saving option)
When filling out Form I-765 for OPT application, you can request the Social Security Administration (SSA) to issue you an SSN.
On page 2 of Form I-765, check "Yes" for Items 14 and 15, and then fill in Item 16 (father's name) and Item 17 (mother's name).
If your OPT application is approved, you will receive your SSN card within 1 month.
2. Apply for an SSN within 30 days before the start date on your EAD card
You can also apply for an SSN after receiving your EAD card at a local SSA office. Make sure to bring the following documents:
-
Passport with at least 6 months of validity
-
I-94
-
OPT I-20
-
Student ID
-
SSN application form (Form SS-5)
-
EAD card
Typically, you will receive your SSN card within 1 month. If you do not receive your SSN on time, visit the SSA office to check the status of your application.
