OPT FAQ - Can I Get OPT After Completing Each Degree?
It depends on your degree and your previous OPT usage history.
OPT
You can only use OPT once per degree level. For example, if you earn two master’s degrees, you are eligible for OPT for only one of them.
STEM OPT
You can use STEM OPT only twice in your lifetime. For example, you can use it once for a STEM undergraduate degree and once for a master's degree. In this case, even if you earn a STEM PhD, you will not qualify for a third STEM OPT.
Important Notes:
Both initial OPT and the STEM OPT Extension must be used as they become available. They cannot be saved for future degrees. If you do not use them, it will be considered a voluntary waiver.
For example, you cannot complete your studies from undergraduate to PhD and then apply for a cumulative 3-year OPT period.
