F-1 Visa Application: Interview Process

This article provides a detailed explanation of the F-1 visa interview process, guiding you step-by-step through the F-1 visa interview.

Step 1: Prepare all required documents and arrive at the consulate at least 30 minutes early

For the required documents, please refer to: F-1 Visa Application: Required Materials.

Caution:

If you arrive at the consulate more than 30 minutes after your scheduled appointment time, you will not be allowed to attend the interview and will need to reschedule.

Step 2: Store personal items before entering the consulate

After arrival, you will first need to store your personal belongings. Please note that the consulate cannot hold or store prohibited items for you.

Items prohibited by U.S. Consulates include:

  • Battery-powered or electronic devices such as mobile phones, USB drives, electronic watches, pagers, cameras, audio/video tapes, CDs, MP3 players, floppy disks, laptops, or portable music players;

  • Luggage items including travel bags, backpacks, briefcases, suitcases, leather bags, cloth bags, and zip folders. Only small handbags, purses, or plastic bags containing application documents are allowed;

  • Food and drink, including bottled water;

  • Sealed envelopes or packages;

  • Cigarettes, cigars, matchboxes, or lighters;

  • Sharp objects such as scissors, pocket knives, or nail clippers;

  • Any type of weapon or explosive material.

Step 3: Line up to enter the consulate

Regardless of the location or appointment time, all applicants must wait in line to enter the consulate. The waiting time varies considerably, ranging from 20 minutes to over an hour, depending on the day's volume of applicants.

Notes:

  • You may have someone accompany you while waiting outside the consulate, but they cannot enter with you unless you require assistance due to disability.

  • While in line, staff members will check your DS-160 confirmation page and passport. Afterward, they will attach a barcode to the back of your passport containing information such as your name, interview location, appointment time, and visa category.

Step 4: Enter the consulate and wait for your interview

  • Upon entering the main hall, you will see dozens of windows with staff members seated behind them.

  • Once inside, staff will direct you to various windows to complete different steps of the process.

  • You will submit documents, provide fingerprints, and have your interview at separate windows.

  • At the document submission window, you will hand over your passport, photo, appointment letter, and DS-160 confirmation page. The staff member will review these materials and return them to you if everything is in order.

  • Next, you will be directed to another window for fingerprinting. You will first provide prints for your left hand (excluding the thumb), then your right hand (excluding the thumb), and finally both thumbs together.

  • Finally, you will be guided to the interview window to wait for your turn.1

Step 5: Join the interview

  • Greet the visa officer politely. Even if they do not respond enthusiastically, you still need to maintain a proactive attitude throughout the interview.

  • You should only provide the documents requested by the visa officer. Do not overwhelm them with all your paperwork at once. If the officer expresses doubt, you can then offer additional supporting documents.

  • You should be honest and confident during the interview. Avoid one-word answers.

  • Interviews typically last between 1 to 10 minutes. Most interviews end within 3 minutes.

  • The visa officer will announce the result immediately after the interview. Results include approval, denial, or administrative processing.

  • If your application is approved, the officer will keep your passport and give you a receipt. Your passport with the F-1 visa page will be mailed to your address within 1-2 weeks.
