This guide provides advice for F-1 students to ensure smooth re-entry into the U.S., helping you avoid potential risks associated with international travels.
International students must be cautious when re-entering the U.S. during CPT and OPT. To ensure smooth entry, you should prepare all necessary documents and adhere to immigration regulations. It is also important to maintain close contact with your school's International Students Office and stay informed about the current entry policies.
Re-entering During OPT
If you intend to travel internationally during OPT, you should wait until you have received your EAD card and obtained a job offer. This can help explain the reason for your return to U.S. customs officers.
Documents for Re-Entry:
-
A valid passport with an active F-1 visa;
-
Your most recent I-20 (the travel signature during OPT is valid for only 6 months, so it is best to request a new one before leaving the U.S.);
-
A job offer letter detailing your position, employment dates, and job responsibilities;
-
If you have already started working, you can bring your most recent 3 paystubs.
Re-entering During CPT
While most students using CPT can travel internationally without issues, those with more complex situations, such as Day 1 CPT students, should be particularly careful when re-entering the U.S.
Documents for Re-Entry:
-
Latest I-20 Form (Including CPT Authorization and travel signature);
-
Transcripts and Class Schedules (Proof of course participation);
-
Bank Statements (Proof of sufficient funds for living expenses and tuition);
-
Course Requirements for the Program (Proof of CPT's necessity for coursework);
-
DSO Contact Information (For customs to contact your school when necessary);
-
Job Offer Letter;
-
CPT Agreement.
Note:
When asked about CPT, you need to emphasize that your purpose of using CPT is to support your studies, not merely to work.
