F-1 Renting: How to Change Your Address When Moving?

This article provides a comprehensive guide on how to update your address information when you move.

For international student, moving in the U.S. is more than just packing up their belongings. As an international, you also need to promptly update your new address with various organizations to avoid missing important mails, packages, and bills.

1. Address in the SEVP Portal

During your OPT period, be sure to update your address in the SEVP Portal or report it to your school’s International Students Office. If you forget to make the change, contact your school’s Designated School Official (DSO) as soon as possible.

2. Address in the School System

Log in to your school’s system and update your address to ensure you will not miss any important mail from the school.

3. Address on Your Driver’s License and State ID (DMV)

When you move to a new address, you must also update the address on your driver’s license and state ID. You can do this in person at a local DMV or online. If you want to avoid long lines, you can do it at a DMV Kiosk.

4. Mailing Address (USPS)

If you are expecting mail at your previous address, you can use the USPS mail forwarding service. To update your address, you have two options: visiting a local USPS office in person or submitting an online request through the USPS website under "Change of Address" section. This service is affordable, typically costing around $1. Once updated, any mail sent to your old address will be automatically forwarded to your new one.

5. Mobile Carrier Address

Don’t forget to update your billing address with your mobile carrier. You can change the address through their website, mobile app, or by calling customer service.

6. Work Address

Make sure to inform your employer of your new address to avoid losing important documents such as paychecks and tax forms.

7. Online Shopping and Subscription Addresses

Update your mailing address for any online subscriptions, such as Amazon and Netflix. You can do this in the account settings on their websites.

8. Bank Address

Most banks offer multiple ways to update your address. You can do it online, through their mobile app, by phone, or by visiting a branch in person.

9. Tax Address (if applicable)

If you have previously filed a tax return, don’t forget to notify the IRS of your new address. You can do this by filling out Form 8822 and mailing it to the IRS.

10. Utility Address

Submit your new address online for utilities and make sure to close out the previous account to avoid paying for the new resident's usage.

11. Insurance Address

Update your address with all your insurance providers, whether it is for health, auto, or pet.

12. Membership Addresses

If you are a member of any organizations, such as alumni associations, social clubs, or websites, be sure to update your address with them as well.
