This article introduces the four important types of insurance for international students in the U.S., providing a quick and clear overview of each one.
As an F-1 student in the United States, you may need to obtain the following types of instance:
1. Health Insurance
Healthcare costs in the U.S. are notoriously high. Without insurance, a single visit to the emergency room could cost several thousand dollars.
Most U.S. universities require international students to have health insurance. Schools usually partner with major insurance providers to offer health insurance plans for students. While these plans offer comprehensive coverage, they usually exclude dental and vision care, and tend to be more expensive.
Students also have the option to choose other insurance providers. Since international students are usually young, which means they have less chronic diseases, these alternative plans may be more affordable. Students can also purchase additional dental and vision insurance if needed.
If you choose an alternative insurance plan, you can provide its information to waive the school's default insurance plan.
2. Renters Insurance
If you live off-campus, you may be required to purchase renters insurance. Whereas renters insurance may not be required by contracts or local regulations, it is still worth considering.
Renters insurance can protect your personal property, providing compensation for stolen items (like computers and furniture) as well as liability coverage if someone is injured in your home. Renters insurance is usually affordable, with monthly premiums around $10.
3. Car Insurance
U.S. law requires car owners to purchase car insurance, which covers property damage and injury compensation resulting from traffic accidents.
The cost of car insurance depends on factors such as your car’s brand, driving history, and maintenance. It is recommended to compare prices on the websites of various insurance companies.
We suggest choosing a large insurance company because their claims processes are more reliable. There are over 2,500 auto insurance companies in the U.S., and the top 10 companies are: State Farm, Geico, Progressive, Allstate, USAA, Liberty Mutual, Farmers, Nationwide, American Family, and Travelers.
4. Travel Insurance
If you plan to travel during your studies, consider purchasing travel insurance. Travel insurance can cover unexpected expenses during your trip, including medical costs, lost luggage, and emergency trip cancellations.
Notes:
-
Each insurance plan has different terms, so read each agreement carefully.
-
While cost is important, it should not be your only consideration. You also need to consider factors such as coverage limits, exclusions, and deductibles.
-
You should understand how to file a claim and be aware of the deadlines to avoid unnecessary issues.
