Before applying for Day 1 CPT, you must first be admitted to a school that offers Day 1 CPT, transfer your SEVIS record to that school, and then prepare the required materials.
Day 1 CPT Application Process
This guide is primarily for F-1 students whose OPT is about to expire. If you are changing from another status to F-1, please begin the process at least 3 months in advance.
- 3-4 months before your status expires: Begin searching for schools and programs.
- 2-3 months before your status expires: Complete the school application and receive an offer of admission.
- 1 month before the program start date: Contact your previous school to transfer SEVIS to the new school.
-
About 2 weeks before the program start date: Complete the CPT application according to the requirements of your new school.
- Start of Program: Receive a new I-20 with CPT authorization before the first day of classes, after which you can begin working according to the CPT start date on the I-20.
Caution:
After transferring your SEVIS record, your OPT will end immediately. During the period between transferring SEVIS and obtaining CPT authorization, you will not be allowed to work. You should actively communicate with your school's DSO to minimize this gap.
