Elon Musk has filed a federal lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI, accusing them of creating an exclusive arrangement that unfairly favors ChatGPT on iPhones — and blocks competitors like his own chatbot Grok from reaching users.
Filed by Musk’s companies X Corp. and xAI in Fort Worth, Texas, the lawsuit claims that Apple’s integration of OpenAI into its operating system has effectively given ChatGPT monopoly status on iPhones, limiting innovation and consumer choice.
Key allegations from the lawsuit include:
Musk is demanding billions in damages and a court order to stop what he calls an “illegal arrangement” between Apple and OpenAI.
OpenAI responded that the lawsuit is part of Musk’s “ongoing pattern of harassment.” Apple has not commented, but previously stated that its deal with OpenAI is non-exclusive, and it can integrate other AI apps if desired.
This lawsuit mirrors some of the U.S. Department of Justice’s antitrust claims against Apple, filed in 2023, which also accused the tech giant of stifling innovation and competition through its App Store rules.
With Musk’s growing rivalry with Sam Altman — his former co-founder at OpenAI — this legal battle could reshape how AI platforms compete on the world’s most powerful devices.
