S5 Blog: When Your Employer Won't Sign: CPT Alternatives, Staffing Agencies and Hours
Quick answer. Without approved CPT, you can't work for that employer. Ask your advisor what your school accepts, and don't start or continue until your updated I-20 shows the job.
Alternatives. Some schools accept an employment verification letter (on letterhead, with your title, duties, hours, start date, location and pay) or a recent offer letter instead of their form. Policies differ and are tightening under the August 2026 guidance, so ask in writing.
Staffing agency? It can be your CPT employer if it's your employer of record and the role fits your program. Check with your DSO before each change of assignment.
Too few hours? There's no federal minimum, but your school may set one, and changing your hours can mean a changed authorization.
1099 role? Many schools won't authorize contractor work. Ask our senior consultant first.
DSO says the job doesn't qualify? Get the reason in writing and share it with us. We'll help you fix the request or plan another role.
Next step: reply with your employer's response and your school's document list.
