S5 Blog: Renewing CPT Every Term: Employer Agreements, Windows and Continuous Authorization

Renewing CPT Every Term: Employer Agreements, Windows and Continuous Authorization
Quick answer. CPT is usually authorized one term at a time. Submit next term's request inside your school's renewal window, so the new dates start where the old ones stop. A day without authorization is a day you can't work.

Expect a closer look in 2026. Under the August 2026 SEVP guidance, schools may ask for new documents, such as a training plan, even for the same employer. Your current CPT isn't cancelled, but start earlier.

A gap-free timeline
1. 45–60 days before your CPT end date: ask for the renewal window and document list.
2. When the window opens: submit, and keep the ticket number.
3. Past the school's usual timing: tell us.
4. Last day of your current CPT with no new I-20: stop working until it arrives.

Breaks: work only if your CPT dates cover them. Remote roles: tell your DSO where you'll actually work. Typos: ask your DSO to fix them and confirm in writing that your CPT stays valid. Not working yet? That's fine; request CPT before your first day.

Next step: reply with your CPT end date, and we'll remind you before your window opens.
This article is general information as of October 21, 2026, not legal advice. Your DSO decides CPT authorization.
