S5 Blog: Bringing Your Family on F-2: Rules for Spouses and Children

Quick answer. Your spouse and unmarried children under 21 can join you as F-2 dependents. Ask your DSO for a dependent I-20 for each of them, with proof of extra funds per person.

Getting F-2 status: family members abroad apply for F-2 visas at a US consulate. Family members already in the US may be able to change status, so talk to our senior consultant first. Their status depends on yours.

Studying full-time on F-2 can cause serious problems with a later change of status.

Travel: each dependent needs a passport, F-2 visa and an I-20 with a recent travel signature.
