S4 Blog: Your First Term: Orientation, School Email, Registration and Staying in Status
Check your personal inbox and spam folder for your orientation invite and school email login. Register for a full course load, attend from the first day, keep every I-20, and tell your school and consultant early if anything blocks you.
Orientation and school email
Schools usually send orientation details and your school email login after the deposit and I-20 steps are done, often in the weeks before the start. If neither has arrived a week before classes, tell your consultant so the school can be checked.
Registration and schedule
Some schools register you automatically; others open registration in a portal. Your advisor's email says which. If you have no course schedule a week before the start, ask the school and tell your consultant.
Full-time enrollment
F-1 students must generally be enrolled full-time each term. Day-1 CPT programs are built as full-time hybrid programs. Rare exceptions exist, but only your DSO can approve them in advance. Remember that if CPT is authorized, you must still maintain a full course of study while school is in session.
Attendance and reporting in
Transfer students must report to the new DSO and register within 15 days of the program start date on the new I-20. Not showing up at the start of the term can lead a school to end your SEVIS record. Missing an orientation session is usually fixable; missing the start of classes is serious.
Records to keep
Keep them for future applications. Immigration offices may ask for evidence of status later.
If you cannot attend, register or start on time
Contact your DSO before the term begins if you can. Then tell your consultant. The sooner the school hears from you, the more options exist.
When information is missing
Email your advisor and DSO, keep a copy, and give a specific date for follow-up. Ask your consultant to escalate if there is no answer.
Next steps
Create a first-term calendar with orientation, registration, first class, CPT window and your DSO contact date.
