S4 Blog: Enrollment Deposits Explained: Amounts, Deadlines, Refunds and What They Unlock

Deposits are where many enrollments stall. This guide explains the vocabulary, why deadlines matter, and what to ask before you pay.

A deposit confirms your seat and is usually credited toward your first tuition bill. Amounts, deadlines and refund rules are set by each school. Never assume one school's rules apply to another. Get your school's rule in writing before you pay.

Names you may see
Schools use different labels for the payment that confirms your seat: acceptance fee, enrollment deposit, registration deposit, tuition deposit. Often they are the same thing, but check what your school means and whether it is credited toward tuition.

Term Typical meaning Ask the school
Application fee Charged to review an application; often waived Was it waived for my route?
Acceptance / enrollment / registration deposit Confirms your seat Is it credited to tuition? Refundable?
Tuition deposit A prepayment toward tuition Same questions
Other fees (technology, orientation) Separate charges Which are required, and when?

What a deposit can unlock
At many schools, the I-20, course schedule, school email or registration depend on the deposit. A late deposit can hold these up.

Deadlines
Pay by the school's stated deadline, which falls before the start date. Paying after the program starts is not a safe plan, and if your SEVIS record has already moved to the school, a missed deposit can block registration. A consultant's rule of thumb is not a deadline. Use the school's written date.

Refunds
Some schools refund the deposit if a change of status or visa is denied; others keep it. Ask these before paying:
  1. Is the deposit refundable, and under what conditions?
  2. What happens if my change of status or visa is denied?
  3. What proof do you need (denial notice, receipt)?
  4. By what date must I request a refund?

If you switch to another school after paying, the deposit is often non-refundable.

Deferral
At many schools the deposit carries over if you defer, but the rule is school-specific. Ask in your written deferral request and keep the reply.

Payment plans and scholarships
Many schools offer tuition payment plans through their billing office, billed per term after the deposit. Details vary. See our scholarships guide.

Order of steps for transfer students
Pay the deposit and have financial documents accepted before requesting your SEVIS release.

Next steps
Request your school's amount, deadline, refund rule and deferral rule in writing, and save the reply.
