S4 Blog: CPT at a Day-1 CPT School: Who Approves It, When to Apply and What Your Employer Signs

Enrolling in a Day-1 CPT program does not automatically give you permission to work. CPT must be approved by your school's DSO and appear on your I-20 before you begin.

CPT is authorized by your school's DSO and printed on your I-20. You do not apply to USCIS and you do not receive an EAD for CPT. Work only from the start date printed on the I-20, for the employer and dates shown.

CPT vs. EAD

What your school will likely ask

Each school has its own process: an online form, a portal request, or a ticket to the international office. Ask your DSO for the current process and window. Some ask for requests a couple of weeks before the program starts; others open later. Typical documents:
  • An offer letter on company letterhead with job title, duties, hours, start and end dates, work address and pay
  • The school's employer agreement or CPT form, signed by the employer
  • Under the August 2026 guidance, possibly more: confirmation from your academic department that the training is part of the curriculum, a course description or a training plan
Confirm exactly what your school requires. Do not assume an offer letter alone is enough.

The curriculum connection
CPT must relate directly to your major and be an integral part of the school's established curriculum. A job unrelated to your program cannot be authorized. If you are unsure, ask your DSO before you accept an offer.

Timing and the "no job yet" question
You can enroll without a job. You request CPT once you have a qualifying offer, and you cannot work until it is authorized. CPT is not mandatory in your first term.

No work before the effective date
Even one day before the printed start date counts as unauthorized employment. A pending request, an offer letter or the start of classes does not authorize work. If authorization is delayed, tell your employer your start depends on it and tell your consultant so the school can be contacted.

If you have already worked before authorization, stop working and speak to your consultant and a qualified immigration professional promptly.

Changing employers or jobs
CPT is authorized for a specific employer and dates. A new employer requires new authorization before your first day. Material changes to the role or dates should also go through your DSO.

Wrong dates on the I-20
Ask the DSO to correct them immediately, and work only within the dates currently printed until a corrected I-20 arrives.

Already have CPT?
Do not assume your authorization is cancelled or unaffected. Read your I-20 (employer, location, dates, full- or part-time) and ask your DSO how your school is applying current guidance.

Next steps
Ask your DSO: What is the current CPT process and window? What documents do I need? Is my program's practical training required, and how do you document that?

Disclaimer: General information, not legal advice. CPT eligibility depends on your school's curriculum and your circumstances.
