S2 Blog: You Submitted. Now What? Confirmation, Tracking, Timelines and Missing-Document Emails

Once you submit, anxiety often takes over. “Did they receive it? How long does this take? Why haven’t I heard anything?” This article explains what happens after submit, how to track your application, and what to expect at each stage.

The Basic Timeline

Day 0 (Submission): You hit submit and get a confirmation.

Days 1–7: School receives and reviews your file (background check, transcripts, completeness).

Days 7–14: Admissions committee reviews and makes a decision (usually standard timeline; expedited options exist).

Day 14+: You get an offer or a deficiency request.

After offer: I-20 checklist sent (financial documents, etc.); I-20 preparation takes 3–5 more days.

Total: From submission to I-20 in hand: typically 3–4 weeks (standard) to 1–2 weeks (expedited).

Stage 1: Confirmation (Immediate)

Right after you submit, you should get:

  1. A confirmation page (screenshot this and save it)
  2. A confirmation email (from the application portal, usually within minutes; check spam folder)
  3. An application number or reference ID (note this down)

         What to do:

    • Save the confirmation page screenshot

    • Save the confirmation email

    • Write down your application number

    • Forward both to your GoElite consultant as proof of submission

If you don’t get a confirmation email within 30 minutes: Contact the school’s admissions office and ask if your application came through. Better to catch a technical glitch now than wait two weeks assuming everything is fine.

Stage 2: Under Review (Days 1–7)

After you submit, the school’s admissions team does a completeness check:

  • Does the file have all required documents?
  • Are transcripts official?
  • Is financial proof dated properly?
  • Are all required fields filled?

What you might see:

  • Nothing (radio silence is normal)
  • Or your GoElite consultant might see a status update in their portal showing “Under Review” or “In Process”

What to expect: This is the phase where missing-document requests sometimes come (see Stage 3 below) If your file is incomplete, you’ll get an email asking for specific documents

Timeline: Typically 3–7 days, depending on how busy admissions is.

What to do:

  • Don’t panic if you haven’t heard anything by day 3
  • If the school asks for missing documents, respond within 24–48 hours
  • Keep your consultant in the loop if anything is requested

Stage 3: Missing-Document Requests (If Applicable)

A “missing document” email is routine. It doesn’t mean you did anything wrong. It just means the school needs something to move forward.

Common requests:

  • More recent bank statement (your statement is older than three months)
  • Degree diploma (transcript alone isn’t proof you graduated)
  • Notarized explanation (name mismatch across documents)
  • Current I-20 (if you didn’t include your prior I-20 with transfer application)
  • Employment verification letter (for CPT job matching)

How to handle it:

1. Read the request carefully — exactly what do they need?

2. Gather the document(s)

3. Email your consultant right away

4. Submit within the deadline they give (usually 5–10 days)

5. Include a brief note: “In response to your request of [date], please find [document] attached”

Timeline: You have 5–10 days to respond. If you respond within 3 days, the review restarts immediately.

What NOT to do:

  • Don’t ignore the request
  • Don’t submit a document that’s “close enough” if they asked for something specific
  • Don’t wait until the last day

Stage 4: Admission Decision (Days 7–14 After Submission)

The admissions committee reviews your file and decides: Admit or Deny.

What you might see:

  • Email subject: “Congratulations, you’re admitted!” or “Application Decision”
  • Letter in your portal showing conditional offer or full admit
  • Sometimes: “offer pending” (they’ll admit if you meet a minor condition, like showing final transcript)

Timing: - Standard: 14 days from submission - Expedited (if you requested): 5–7 days from submission

Your GoElite consultant can often request expedited review with the school if your timeline is tight (approaching status deadline, urgent situation). Ask them about it.

What to do:

  • Save the admission email/letter
  • Don’t assume you’re done. Read the full offer to see if there are conditions
  • If conditional, you’ll need to meet those conditions before I-20 issuance

Stage 5: I-20 Checklist (After Admission)

Once admitted, the school sends a “checklist” of documents needed for I-20 issuance:

  • Bank statement or proof of funds
  • Sponsor letter (if applicable)
  • Proof of employment (if using current job for CPT)
  • Any other school-specific requirements

Timeline: Usually received within 1–3 days of your admission

What to do:

1. Gather documents (you probably already have some)

2. Confirm everything is dated recently (bank statements, sponsor letters)

3. Check your name spelling across all documents

4. Submit within their deadline (usually 5–10 days)

What your consultant does:

  • Reviews your documents against the checklist
  • Flags any issues before you send
  • Coordinates with the school if something is missing

Stage 6: I-20 Issuance (3–5 Days After Checklist Completion)

Once the school receives your complete I-20 checklist, they prepare your I-20 document.

What you get:

  • An official I-20 form (multiple copies, one for you, one for SEVIS, one archived)
  • A welcome package or next-steps letter
  • Sometimes: instructions for next steps (SEVIS activation, visa application if needed, etc.)

Timeline: Usually 3–5 business days after the school receives your complete checklist

What to do:

  • Save your I-20 (you’ll need it for visa application, visa interview, travel, etc.)
  • Share it with your consultant
  • If visa interview needed, move to that process next
  • If you’re already in the U.S., proceed to transfer coordination

Monitoring Your Application: How GoElite Tracks For You

One major benefit of working with GoElite is that your consultant can see your application status in their portal, which you might not be able to see yourself.

What your consultant sees:

  • Application received status - “Under Review” status
  • Any internal notes from admissions
  • When a decision is made
  • When I-20 is issued

What you see:

  • Usually just the confirmation email (if submitted through Apply Now link)
  • Any missing-document emails sent directly to you

What your consultant does:

  • Tracks your file
  • Reminds you of deadlines
  • Follows up with school if something is slow
  • Alerts you immediately if missing documents are requested
  • Can request expedited processing if needed

Post-Submission Red Flags

Radio silence for 3+ weeks after submission: Not necessarily bad, but reach out. Email the school’s admissions office: “I submitted my application on [date]. Could you confirm receipt and current status?” Include your application number.

You get a call from admissions: Some schools call applicants for brief interviews or to clarify something in the file. Answer honestly; these are usually just confirmations, not rejections.

You get an email asking to verify employment: For CPT students, this is normal. Respond with confirmation from your employer or HR.

Deficiency request after 2+ weeks: Sometimes schools find issues late in the process. Respond quickly.
