S2 Blog: From Decision to Submitted: How the Application Stage Actually Works

Once you’ve decided to apply to a Day-1 CPT program, the next question is usually: “Okay, now what actually happens?” This article walks through the application stage from the moment you commit to a school through the moment your application is submitted, so you know what to expect, what falls on you, and what a GoElite consultant typically handles.

The Shape of This Stage

  • You choose a school (or a short shortlist) and confirm your intended intake
  • You gather documents in parallel, this is usually the longest part
  • Your application is prepared, reviewed, and submitted through the school’s official application portal
  • Your GoElite consultant coordinates with the school on your behalf, tracks deadlines, and flags any gaps

How the Apply Now Link Works

When GoElite sends you a referral email for a school, it includes an “Apply Now” button. Clicking that button takes you directly to the application portal and auto-waives any application fee. If you use that same email to register, GoElite can track your application, send you reminders, and coordinate with the school if anything is slow or if you have questions. It’s worth using; it’s free, it removes a barrier, and it actually helps the process move faster because GoElite can flag your application to the school’s admission team if needed. (If you accidentally apply a different way, tell your consultant right away so they can still help you.)

What You Do vs. What a GoElite Consultant Does

Task

You

Consultant

Choosing your target school(s)

Yes, final decision

Can provide shortlist and comparisons

Requesting your own transcripts

Yes

Can tell you what’s needed and where to find each school’s checklist

Writing your statement of purpose

Yes

Can review for clarity and consistency, not write it for you

Reviewing the application before submission

Yes

Can flag obvious gaps or inconsistencies

Submitting the application

You submit; consultant tracks it

Coordinates and communicates with the school

Responding to deficiency letters

You respond; consultant guides the process

Helps interpret what the school is asking for

Timeline: How Long Does This Actually Take?

After you submit your application, here’s what normally happens:

  • Week 1–2: School reviews your application and makes an admission decision
  • Week 2–3: School sends you the I-20 checklist (financial documents, etc.) if approved
  • Days 3–5 after checklist completion: School prepares your I-20
  • After I-20 issuance: You coordinate a SEVIS transfer with your current school (if transferring), typically one week before your program start date

If the school needs expedited processing and you ask GoElite to request it, decisions can come faster, sometimes within a week. But standard timing is two weeks for the admission decision. Don’t stress if it takes the full two weeks; it’s normal.

What “Using the Same Email” Actually Means

When you register through the Apply Now link, use the email address you want GoElite to track. If you later apply to a different school with a different email, GoElite can’t see that application. So if you’re applying to a backup school (covered in article 5), use the same email for both unless you have a specific reason not to. Your consultant can track both applications and help coordinate if both schools move forward simultaneously.
