Can Day-1 CPT Be Fully Online? Why 100% Online Cannot Issue an I-20
A 100% online program should be treated as a red flag when choosing a Day-1 CPT program. Day-1 CPT programs generally follow a hybrid or low-residency format, meaning you may have online classes along with required in-person academic participation.
F-1 students also have limits on how much online coursework can count toward a full course of study. Because of this, you should not assume that a fully online program can support F-1 status and CPT in the same way as a program with legitimate in-person requirements.
Before enrolling, review the school’s actual attendance structure and ask the DSO how the online and in-person classes are handled. The important difference is that having some online classes is not the same as being enrolled in a 100% online program.
